Upcoming Career Center Deadlines: Teach for America, ConnPIRG, US PIRG, and Breakthrough Collaborative

TFA-logoTeacher, Teach for America: Disparities in education exist throughout the country – urban and rural, east coast to west, small towns and large. Teach For America works with our 48 regional offices to assign corps members to high-need areas. Whether your long-term career goals lie within education or other fields, your corps experience will expand your options and deepen your commitment to educational excellence for all students. Nearly 28,000 people are part of the Teach For America alumni network, and have access to resources and benefits that help them continue to make an impact after the corps. (Final Deadline: Thursday, February 20)

 

connpirgIntern, CONNPIRG: The Connecticut Public Interest Research Group (ConnPIRG) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that advocates in the public interest. For over 35 years, ConnPIRG has tackled critical issues from reforming health care to building a 21st century transportation infrastructure to protecting consumers from unsafe food and products. We get results by researching solutions to critical problems, gathering citizen support for policy reform, building coalitions, educating the public and lobbying our decision-makers. We are hiring interns to work closely with full-time organizers and advocates to demonstrate support for our issues from local citizens, organizations, and elected officials. (Deadline: Tuesday, February 25)

 

uspirgCampus Organizer, US PIRG:  The Student PIRGs are mobilizing America’s college students to take action. Our Campus Organizers are headed to 50 college campuses across the country, where they will recruit, train and work alongside thousands of student activists. Together we’ll go beyond studying the issues; we’ll document the problems, find practical solutions, inform the public and make the case directly to decision-makers. And when powerful special interests stand in the way, we’ll mobilize the student body, the local citizens and as many people as it takes to make our voices heard in city halls, state capitols, Congress, the White House or wherever it will make a difference. (Deadline: Tuesday, February 25)

 

breakthroughTeacher, Breakthrough Collaborative: The Breakthrough Teaching Residency is one of the most rewarding and rigorous experiences available to undergraduates in the county. Whether you have always dreamed of being in the classroom or are considering it for the first time, teaching at Breakthrough will help prepare you for a career in education while building skills that are transferable to any profession. Breakthrough Collaborative brings together passionate undergraduates from all majors to teach our motivated middle-school students. As a Breakthrough Teaching Fellow, you will receive extensive training, continuous support, and the opportunity to lead a classroom. Throughout the summer, you will assume leadership roles and practice persistence, creativity, flexibility, and problem-solving. Under the guidance of experienced educators, you will work alongside other exceptional college students to plan and teach classes, manage a classroom, advise students, lead field trips, and develop as a teacher and leader. (Deadline, Tuesday, February 25)

I am the Civic Engagement Fellow for 2013-2014. While a student at Wesleyan I double majored in Psychology and Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and completed a joint thesis during my senior year. I am interested in issues of social justice, mental health, media, and global welfare.
