The Jewett Center for Community Partnerships (JCCP) Mentor-In-Residence Program* supports the civic preparedness of Wesleyan students in collaboration with community partners committed to the pursuit of a just, equitable, and sustainable future for communities beyond the campus—nearby and around the world.
Mentors-in-residence are nonprofit leaders, social entrepreneurs, activists, and/or public figures whose experiences bridge the gap between theory and practice. They are proven facilitators of learning in their fields, and are committed to rigorous debate, broad dissemination of work pertaining to public life, and collective impact. While this program prioritizes student learning outcomes, it also underscores the JCCP’s commitment to support the the capacity building of the region’s non-profit and social impact sector.
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Rosemary Ostfeld will be the 2019/2020 JCCP Mentor-In-Residence. Rosemary is an environmental scientist and social entrepreneur. She is currently a visiting instructor at Wesleyan teaching “CSPL 239 – Startup Incubator: The Art and Science of Launching Your Idea” and “ENVS 282 – Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems.” Her office hours are 12:00-1:00 and 4:15-5:00 on Tuesdays in Allbritton 022.
The Jewett Center will host a meet-and-greet with Dr. Ostfeld on September 23, 4:30-5:30 p.m. in Allbritton 311. All are welcome. Students, faculty, staff, and community members with an interest in social entrepreneurship, environmental sustainability, and food systems are especially encouraged to attend.
Dr. Rosemary Ostfeld
Rosemary is an interdisciplinary environmental scientist and National Geographic Explorer. She completed a BA/MA in Biology and Earth and Environmental Sciences at Wesleyan University, an MPhil in Environmental Policy, and a PhD in Land Economy at the University of Cambridge as a Cambridge Trust Scholar. Her research focuses on renewable energy, and sustainable food systems. At her startup company, she is working to develop an online platform to help people purchase food directly from local farms and transition to a healthy and environmentally sustainable diet.
CSPL 239 – Startup Incubator: The Art and Science of Launching Your Idea
Tuesdays, 1:20 – 4:10 pm
The Startup Incubator is a one-semester, experiential learning program designed to teach and enable student entrepreneurs to develop sustainable business models from their ideas. The program will bring together an ambitious, committed, and diverse group of individuals from all classes and majors who are passionate about developing successful solutions to challenges; identify as entrepreneurs, disruptors, and thought leaders; and have the tenacity, work ethic, and ability to succeed. All participating students should have a promising business idea and take the course with the intention of launching or running their own venture.

ENVS 282 – Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems
Wednesdays, 1:20 – 4:10 pm
This course explores strategies to create a sustainable agriculture and food system. The course will begin with an overview of the environmental issues associated with our agriculture and food system along with current production and consumption trends. Other topics covered in the course will include: environmental certification, starting and managing a farm, organic versus conventional farming, and the impact of diet choice on the environment.
